Spartanburg, S.C. - After opening the tournament with a 73 and struggling to find his swing, USC Upstate men's golfer Josh Gallman found the consistency he wanted and posted a 4-under-par 68 in the second round and finished the day tied for third in the Coca-Cola/Wofford Invitational Monday afternoon at the Country Club of Spartanburg.
Gallman stands third with a 3-under-par total of 141. He will begin Tuesday's final round three strokes out of the lead held by East Tennessee State's Michael Stewart.
Gallman, a senior from Gaffney, S.C., helped lead the Spartans to a 4-under-par 284 in the second round. It was the third-lowest score of any team in the second round after three players carded scores under par. Upstate entered the second round tied for fifth after posting 292 in the first round. With a 576 total, the Spartans are fourth, trailing Wofford by two strokes.
"I got some more putts to fall in the second round," said Gallman. "I didn't hit the ball well all day. But, I started scrambling better. I made some really good putts in the second round. We need to play well tomorrow. The pins are not going to be that hard. We need to attack the pins and make some putts. Hopefully, we can shoot a good score and move up the leaderboard."
ETSU enters the final round with the lead and a team total of 564. The Buccaneers are followed by Charleston Southern (569), Wofford (574), Upstate (576), A-Sun foe Stetson (578), Samford (579), Elon (584), High Point (585), Gardner-Webb (587), Presbyterian (588), Winthrop (594), Radford (596) and Appalachian State (599).
Matthew Hopper posted a 2-under-par 70, using a stretch of holes where he birdied four of five holes to move into a tie for 19th at even par 144. Michael Lawrence is tied for 36th after rounds of 73 and 75 (148), while Nate Irvin posted rounds of 72 and 79. Brian Horton rallied admirably. After opening the tournament with an 81, he shaved 10 strokes off of his score and posted a 1-under 71 to help the Spartan cause in the second round.
"I wasn't making any putts, so I changed golf balls and the putts just started going in," said Hopper, who posted the second-lowest round of the day for Upstate with his second-round 70. "It sounds strange, but that's what happened. We are looking for another solid round under-par. We need to shoot a really good round tomorrow, not only for this tournament, but also to prepare for the conference championships next week."
Gallman played the par-3 holes at 1-under to lead all tournament players in par-3 scoring. He also ranks sixth with 23 pars. Hopper played the par-4s at 1-under and ranks fifth, while Lawrence, at even-par on the par-4s, is eighth. Bryan Otis, playing as an individual, ranks third in par-3 scoring at even-par. He turned in rounds of 81 and 75, rallying in the second round.
