SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The USC Upstate men's tennis team will kick-off the 2010 fall season by hosting the annual USC Upstate Fall Classic. The event will begin on Friday, Sept. 17, at 10:00 a.m. and will conclude on Sunday afternoon.
About the Week
Edgar Rodriguez is the only returner for the Spartans that
played in last season's event. Rodriguez teammed with
Jack Roux and the pair reached the finals of the doubles
'A' draw and were scheduled to face off against
Upstate's Javier Tori and Renzo Airaldi, but the two teams
agreed to double fault in the doubles final.
Joining the Spartans at this weekend's tournament will be
Anderson College, Armstrong Atlantic State, Augusta State,
Campbell, Clemson, Davidson, Furman, Kennesaw State, Lenoir-Rhyne,
Presbyterian College, South Carolina, USC Aiken and Wofford.
This weekend's tournament will be the first of five
tournaments that the Spartans will compete in during the
fall. The Spartans will travel to Athens, Ga., next weekend
as they compete in the Southern Intercollegiate. To begin the
month of October, Upstate will make the short trip to Wofford to
compete in the two-day Wofford Tournament (10/2-3). The
following weekend, Coach De Marzo and his team will travel to
Davidson, N.C., for the Davidson Torunament. To conclude the
fall season, Upstate will travel to Chapel Hill, N.C., for the ITA
Regional (10/14-18).
Spartan Volleys
• Upstate claimed the 2010 Atlantic Sun Conference regular season crown after a perfect 10-0 mark in league play last spring... It was the first outright title for the Spartans, who claimed the 2003 and 2005 Peach Belt Conference regular season title as co-champions... Upstate shared the title with UNF in 2003 and Armstrong Atlantic State in 2005.
• With Upstate's 4-3 victory over ETSU on March 20,
2010, head coach Alessandro De Marzo earned his 100th career
victory as the leader of the Spartan program.
• Upstate welcomes six new players for 2010-11 and they will
have to help fill the shoes of departed seniors Renzo Airaldi, Jack
Roux and Javier Tori, who graduated as the most decorated senior
class in program history.
