Valdosta, Ga. – Former USC Upstate standouts Josh Gallman and Michael Lawrence each did what they had to do on Friday to secure a spot in the PGA Q School as both earned their ticket at a pre-qualifying tournament at Kinderlou Forest Golf Club.
Gallman, from Gaffney, S.C., turned in another solid round, finishing with a 74 on Friday. He totaled a 4-over-par 292 total and finished the qualifying tournament in a tie for 13th. Entering the day tied for 12th, it would have taken a disastrous round to move him out of position.
Gallman opened with bogeys on three of his first five holes, but recorded back-to-back birdies on No. 7 and No. 8. After bogeying the ninth, he played the final nine holes at 1-under to finish with a 74 on the day.
Lawrence needed to go low and certainly did. He entered the day tied for 40th and on the bubble for making the cut for a spot in Q School. He birdied the second hole, then strung three straight birdies together in a row on holes 6-8 to move to 4-under for the round. He took bogey on the 12th hole, but got it back with a birdie on the 14th to finish at 68. He moved up to a tie for 18th in the tournament.
Gallman and Lawrence now advance to the first stage PGA Q School and will play in one of 12 tournaments in the stage. The players will play another 72-hole tournament and if either makes the cut, will move to the second stage. There are three total stages for players to go through Q School in an attempt to secure their PGA Tour card. Gallman and Lawrence will play in their first stage sometime between Oct. 19-30.
