SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The USC Upstate women's soccer team had a pair of players earn postseason honors as announced today by the Atlantic Sun Conference in Macon, Ga. Michelle Calmeyn (Elk Grove, Ill.) earned All-Freshman team honors, while Sarah Plantz (Cartersville, Ga.) was an Academic All-Conference selection.
"Congratulations to both Sarah and Michelle on these honors," said head coach Renee Lopez. "They have both worked very hard this season and are deserving of these achievements. This is great recognition for our program, both athletically and academically."
Calmeyn became the third rookie to earn A-Sun All-Freshman honors after leading the Spartans in goals (5), assists (3), points (13), shots (42) and shots on-goal (22). She joins Ashlee Barrow (2009) and Rachel Collins (2010) as All-Freshman team selections.
Her 42 shots ranked sixth in the A-Sun and she finished the regular-season ninth in shots per contest (2.21). The Spartan forward finished just outside the top-10 in the conference in goals and assists.
Against Alabama State, Sept. 11, Calmeyn recorded the first hat trick of the Division-I era and just the third in school-history. She also added two goals and one assist at Stetson, Oct. 16.
Plantz, a sophomore criminal justice major, owns a 3.95 GPA. Plantz appeared in 16 matches and made 13 starts, while tallying 82 saves. Against Francis Marion, she made nine saves as the Spartans battled to a 1-1 tie against the Patriots, Aug. 28.
Plantz recorded a career-best 13 saves at ETSU, Sept. 25, falling just one save shy of tying a school-record. At Stetson, she also reached double-digits in saves (12).
