Upstate Takes Third, Comer Fourth at C&F Bank Intercollegiate

Williamsburg, Va. – The USC Upstate men's golf team shot its second straight 291 to finish third and Spartanburg native Tyler Comer finished with another solid round to finish fourth in the individual standings at the C&F Bank Intercollegiate Tuesday afternoon.
The C&F Bank Intercollegiate was played on the Woods Course at the Kingsmill Resort. Comer had a strong outing, finishing with a 73 on Tuesday to finish the tournament tied for fourth at 1-under-par. His 132 total was just two strokes back of tournament champion Ryan Vance from James Madison.
Behind the strong play of Comer, and a pair of even-par rounds by two other Spartans on Tuesday, Upstate finished the tournament with a 582 total to finish third. It marks the second top-three finish in the last two tournaments for the Spartans. James Madison won the tournament with a 572 total, shooting 291 on the day. Radford was third at 580, two strokes ahead of Upstate.
"Our goal is to break through and either finish where we start the final round or improve our position," said Upstate head coach Todd Lawton. "With this field being so bunched up, it was really good to stay where we were. It was a strong finish and to have four guys right there around par for the tournament is pretty solid. Our ball-striking in this tournament may have been the best it has ever been. We were around the hole most of the time."
Upstate finished two strokes ahead of UNC Greensboro, which finished fourth with a 585 total. Towson was fifth at 588 and was followed by Central Connecticut (589), Delaware (591), William & Mary (592), Maryland (594), Princeton (595), Binghamton (598), IUPUI (598), Loyola-Maryland (599), IPFW (601), Georgetown (608), Seton Hall (612), Saint Joseph's (613), Canisius (617), Fairfield (617), St. Francis (Pa.) (618), Bucknell (621), St. Bonaventure (623), Niagara (651) and Hofstra (675) in the 24-team field.
Upstate placed four players in the top 20 for the tournament. Beyond Comer's fourth-place effort, Matthew Hopper (Gaffney, S.C.) and Adam Goins (Gaffney, S.C.) each finished tied for 16th with 146 totals. Goins turned in a 72 on Tuesday, while Hopper finished the day with a 74. Brad Sill (Spartanburg, S.C.) also shot 72 on Tuesday and claimed a tie for 20th with a 147 total, one stroke behind Hopper and Goins. Nelson Dickson (Spartanburg, S.C.) finished with a 79 on Tuesday.
"Having Tyler play his first tournament of the spring and lead us just shows you that we have players on the road and at home who can contribute," said Lawton. "It is important to find the right combination as we move toward the conference championship. I feel like on any given day and in any given round, we have the five that are with us and three or four at home who can shoot even par. We have five or six guys who have shot in the 60s in a round and another three or four that have shot even. We have just never had that many options. And, we are young. It is exciting."
