Cardinal Amateur Final Results
Greensboro, N.C. – USC Upstate sophomore standout golfer Adam Goins closed out his summer of tournament play by finishing 25th in the prestigious Cardinal Amateur played at the 7,002-yard, par-70 Cardinal Golf and Country Club course last weekend.
Goins, from Gaffney, S.C., was the only player from South Carolina to qualify for the Cardinal Amateur. The field drew participants from across the United States and from international locations such as Iceland, Sweden, Canada, Belgium and South Africa. Participants were required to send in their playing resume in order to be considered for the tournament. A select number of individuals were sent invitations to play in the tournament, while others had to qualify in late-July.
Goins was one of 78 players to play in the tournament. He opened play with a 74 on Friday, August 12. He rallied to shoot even-par on Saturday, before shooting another 70 on Sunday to finish at 4-over for the tournament with a 54-hole total of 214. He finished in a tie for 25th with four other players.
Olafur Loftsson, from Gardabaer, Iceland, won the Cardinal Amateur with an 11-under total of 199. He shot rounds of 65, 69 and 65.
Goins turned in a strong year for Upstate as a freshman in 2010-11. He became the first freshman at Upstate to win an individual tournament championship when he shot 7-under to win the Caribbean Classic by three strokes over teammate Matthew Hopper (Gaffney, S.C.). He finished the year fourth on the team with a 74.7 stroke average and was the only Spartan with an individual tournament championship.
