Dickson Second at SCGA Amateur Championship

Bluffton, S.C. – The summer extravaganza for USC Upstate men's golfer Nelson Dickson continued Friday afternoon when he shot a 1-under-par 71 and not only made the cut, but stands tied for second after 36 holes of the 80th South Carolina Golf Association (SCGA) Amateur Championship.
The SCGA Amateur Championship is being played on the Dye Course at Colleton River Plantation. A par-72 layout, the Dye Course plays at 7,121 yards and was rated as one the America's Top 100 courses in 2007.
Dickson, from Spartanburg, is one of five Upstate players who qualified for the tournament. He is the top Spartan in the championship. He opened the tournament with a 2-under 70 on Thursday and turned in a 71 Friday to stand tied for second at 3-under. He is tied with three other players, two strokes behind leader Daniel Stanley at 5-under. There are four players at 2-under and seven at 1-under.
Dickson will play in the next to last pairing of the day Saturday in the third round of the tournament, joining Greer's Autin Reeves and Greenville's Lee Palms.
Dickson is one of five Spartan players who started the tournament, but the only one to make the cut. Adam Goins (Gaffney) missed the cut by a single stroke after rounds of 77 and 75 to finish at 152 for 36 holes. Tyler Comer (Pacolet Mills) totaled 155, while McKenzie Oref (Easley) stood at 157. Brad Sill (Spartanburg) rounded out the Upstate contingent with a 158 total. Former Spartan standout Jamie Lightsey (Fort Mill) made the cut at 151.
Dickson will look to not only battle for the SCGA Amateur Championship this weekend, but put his name beside other Upstate golfers who have finished high in the tournament. Former Upstate great Josh Gallman has been the top Spartan finisher in recent years, finishing second in both 2008 and 2009. Taylor Hough, who played in the program when the athletics department was a member of NAIA, won the amateur championship in 1993 after he finished his education at then-USC Spartanburg.
