Spartanburg, S.C. - Coming off an impressive win at the Rutgers Invitational, the USC Upstate men's golf team will hit the course for the first time in over a month when it makes its second trip to Kiawah Island, S.C., for the Wendy's Kiawah Classic Sunday-Tuesday.
When Upstate tee it up Sunday morning at the Wendy's Kiawah Classic, it will have been some 43 days since it last saw tournament play. Still, Upstate is basking in the glow of its third team championship in five trips to Rutgers' tournament, as well as celebrating Adam Goins' second straight individual championship in the event.
The Wendy's Kiawah Classic will be played at the Turtle Point course, one of five venues at the Kiawah Island Golf Resort. The course was designed by Jack Nicklaus. It stretches to 7,011 yards for championship tournament play and is a par-72 layout. Upstate is one of 26 teams to play in the large field. Joining the Spartans and host Charleston Southern in the three-day, 54-hole event are Boise State, Bradley, Butler, Campbell, College of Charleston, UConn, Francis Marion, George Washington, High Point, Jacksonville State, Loyola (Md.), Marquette, Mount St. Mary's, Presbyterian, Radford, South Carolina, St. John's, Stetson, Towson, Upstate, Utah Valley, Western Kentucky, William & Mary, Winthrop and Wisconsin. The field consists of four teams ranked in the Top 100 in the Golfstat rankings: South Carolina (63), College of Charleston (81), Winthrop (83) and Jacksonville State (88).
Upstate head coach Todd Lawton will send the lineup of Adam Goins, Brad Sill, Ryan Cornfield, Brian Horton and Matthew Hopper into action this week. The five have been in the lineup in each of the first two tournaments of the season, including winning the Rutgers Invitational. The team averages 305.7 per round, though that number is slightly skewed with three of six rounds being played at the demanding Ocean Course at Kiawah to open the season just three weeks following the PGA Championship being played at the course.
