Upstate Finishes 8th at Charleston Shootout

Charleston, S.C. – Behind the play of Adam Goins, the USC Upstate men's golf team finished eighth at the Charleston Shootout played at the Links at Stono Ferry Tuesday afternoon.
Goins (Gaffney, S.C.) claimed a top 15 finish, finishing tied for 14th. He shot a 75 in the final round Tuesday and finished with a 218 total.
"Adam is just a steady golfer. He played his game and didn't let the tough conditions today bother him," said Upstate head coach Todd Lawton.
Upstate shot a 306 in the final round and tied Gardner-Webb for eighth in the tournament with an 887 total. Florida, ranked 25th in the nation, won the tournament with a final round 287 and an 844 total. Augusta State, ranked 46th, finished second with an 859 total. Radford was third at 870 and was followed by Charleston Southern (871), College of Charleston (875), Presbyterian (878), Stephan F. Austin (883), Upstate (887), Gardner-Webb (887), Longwood (900), Navy (907), High Point (914), Western Kentucky (919) and Stetson (922)."
Today was an opportunity we missed. The conditions were difficult and all of the teams struggled. The team that would have held it together could have moved up on the leaderboard. We didn't do that. The course had some teeth today," said Lawton.
Matthew Hopper (Gaffney, S.C.) matched Goins' score on the day, shooting a 75 in the final round. He finished tied for 33rd with a 226 total. Brad Sill (Spartanburg) finished the tournament with a 76 and and tied Hopper in 33rd. Brian Horton (Boiling Springs, S.C.) carded an 80 on Tuesday and finished tied for 41st with a 227 total.
"Matthew and Brad held it together at the end of their rounds to help us maintain our position in eighth place. It was a good tournament. It highlighted what we do well and exposed what we need to work on," said Lawton.
Tyler Comer (Spartanburg) finished with a 234 total and Danny Brock (Simpsonville, S.C.) totaled 244 in the tournament that had six players playing to count four scores.
Florida's TJ Vogel won the individual championship with a 10-under-par 206 total.
