Spartans Fall to Bucs, 5-2, in Regular-Season Finale

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – Ramiro Blanco and Yvon Haessig picked up thrilling three-set victories, but it was not enough as No. 73 ETSU claimed a 5-2 victory Saturday in the season finale for both teams at the Buddy Hartsell Tennis Center.
ETSU claimed the doubles point after taking victories at doubles No. 2 and 3. The only Spartan victory in doubles action took place at doubles No. 1 as Ramiro Blanco and Matthias Kidler defeated Sander Gille and Robin Akser, 8-7 (7-4).
In singles action, Ramiro Blanco defeated Sander Gille in a three-set battle at singles No. 1. Blanco dropped the first set, 4-6, before rallying to tie the match with a 7-6 (7-1) win in the second set. In the decisive set, Blanco won the tiebreaker set by a score of 10-4.
Yvon Haessig also rallied from a one-set deficit before rallying for a win. At singles No. 4, Haessig dropped set one to Jeremy Bonnevalle, 2-6, before taking set two, 6-4. In the final set, Haessig outlasted Bonnevalle, 10-8.
The Spartans will return to action next weekend when they play in their first Atlantic Sun Conference championship. Upstate will receive either the four- or five-seed and will face Lipscomb in the opening round of three-day event (hosted by ETSU) that begins Friday morning.
