Goins Fires 67, Moves Into Fourth at S.C. Amateur Championship

Spartanburg, S.C. – Adam Goins, who has been the leader on the course for the USC Upstate men's golf team each of the last two seasons, has turned in a solid showing at the 81st Annual South Carolina Amateur Championship this week. One day before his birthday, he shot a 67 in Saturday's third round at the Country Club of Spartanburg to continue his ascent to the top of the leaderboard and stands fourth in the tournament heading into the final round Sunday.
Goins, a Gaffney native and rising junior at Upstate, stands 3-under-par for the tournament and will begin Sunday's final round in a five-way tie for fourth place. He trails the leader, Cody Proveaux (Leesville), by eight strokes. Proveaux shot a 65 Saturday to vault into first place. He will own a four-shot lead entering the final round.
Goins has made steady progress throughout the tournament. After turning in a 72 to open the tournament on Thursday, doing so while being frustrated with his putting, he shot a 68 Friday. He was one stroke better than that on Saturday, firing a 3-under 67 to move from a tie for 10th into a tie for fourth.
Goins got off to a good start Saturday, recording birdies on three of his first five holes. He finished the round with five birdies, two bogeys and 11 pars.
"I got pretty hot early," said Goins. "I am pretty happy with the 67 and the way I played. After working on some things after the first round Thursday, I have gotten my confidence up a little bit. I have to be aggressive tomorrow. Making up eight strokes is going to be tough, but this is golf and anything can happen. I'm going to stick with the game plan and see what happens tomorrow."
Caleb Sturgeon (Laurens) is second in the tournament at 7-under. J.J. Jordan is third at 5-under and is followed by five players, including Goins, at 3-under.
