Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate women's golf team opened the 2012-13 season at the Terrier Intercollegiate at the Country Club of Spartanburg Monday, and Spartanburg native Taylor Barnes led the way for the Spartans with an even-par 72 and is in the hunt for the individual championship.
Barnes opened with a 72 to lead the Upstate cause. She is tied for third entering Tuesday's final round, four shots back of the tournament leader Mary K Donovan from Gardner-Webb.
"Taylor played a solid and consistent round. The greens can be tricky, but she had a lot of patience with them. She was just steady and it was fun to watch her play," said Upstate assistant coach Audrey Church.
Barnes' effort helped Upstate shoot a 313 to open the tournament. The Spartans are tied for ninth heading into action on Tuesday. Fellow Spartanburg native Brittany Lowe also turned in a solid round, carding a 75, and is tied for 13th.
"Brittany had a good, steady round as well. She stayed within herself and turned in a pretty good effort. Overall, we are very excited about the start. The girls were ready to get this year started and this was a good way to start the year. We are excited to play tomorrow and are looking forward to the rest of the year."
Madison Bryant (Chapin, S.C.) shot an 82 for the third-best score on the day for Upstate. Rachel Reiling (Littleton, Colo.) and Amanda Hall (Tega Cay, S.C.) both shot 84. Reiling is playing her first tournament as a member of the Upstate team after transferring from Adams State. Freshman Malika Allie (Cape Town, South Africa) shot an 84 playing as an individual in her first collegiate tournament.
Gardner-Webb opened with a tournament record 294 to take the team lead. UNC Wilmington is second at 296 and is followed by UNC Pembroke (301), Mercer (304), Elon (308), Samford (309), High Point (309), Wofford (311), Upstate (313), Appalachian State (313), Presbyterian (321), The Citadel (329) and S.C. State (332).
Upstate is just five strokes out of a Top 5 finish entering the final round on Tuesday.
