
Five Spartans Advance to Finals on Day Two of Elon Fall Invitational

Elon, N.C. – The second day of competition of the Elon Fall Invitational saw five USC Upstate men's tennis players advance to the finals of their respective flights Saturday at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
In singles play, Jamie Yates earned a bid into the championship of the B2 Singles Flight main draw. Yates began his day by defeating Fabrice George of North Carolina Central in straight sets 6-1, 6-0, and then held on for a three-set victory over N.C. Wesleyan's Peter Hviid 2-6, 7-5 (7), 6-1. Yates is set to face Christian Kerrigan of Georgia Southern in the championship match at 10:30 a.m. Sunday morning.
The Spartans then saw two doubles combinations move on to the championship match of their flights.
In the A1 Doubles Flight, Ramon Simonetti and Carlos Tajes defeated James Dougherty and Daniel Mack of UNC Greensboro 8-6. Their victory sets up a championship contest at 9 a.m. Sunday with James Madison's Robert Stirling and Miljan Ruzic.
Pedro Carvalho and Rajanvir Dharni responded from their day one defeat to receive a spot in the consolation final of the A2 Doubles Flight. The duo picked up an 8-6 victory over Panayot Kusidi and Eduardo Ugalde of N.C. Wesleyan. Carvalho and Dharni will take on James Madison's Brett Moorhead and Sebastian Salinas Sunday morning at 9 a.m.
Carvalho, playing in the A1 Singles Flight backdraw, won his first match against Mack, but then fell to Stirling in the semifinals 6-0, 6-2.
Dharni and Tajes both took their singles matches into the third set. Dharni fell to Alex Croker of UNC Asheville 2-6, 6-3, 0-1 (6) in the A2 Singles Flight backdraw, while Tajes suffered a 7-5, 0-6, 2-6 loss in the B1 Singles Flight main draw to Ismael Sanchez of Elon.
Simonetti lost to Steven Patrick of Winthrop in the A1 Singles Flight main draw 6-4, 6-0.
