
Yates Captures Individual Title at Elon Fall Invitational

Elon, N.C. – USC Upstate sophomore Jamie Yates capped off his impressive run this weekend at the Elon Fall Invitational by winning the B2 Singles Flight championship Sunday at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
He won the B2 Singles Flight crown after a tough three-set match with Georgia Southern's Christian Kerrigan. Yates dropped the first set 7-6 (5) but responded to win the next two 7-5, 6-4 to claim his first individual championship. The Tauranga, New Zealand native received an opening day bye Friday, and then earned a bid to the finals following two victories Saturday against Fabrice George of North Carolina Central and N.C. Wesleyan's Peter Hviid.
Yates joins Gonzalo Blanco and Rajanvir Dharni as Spartans who have won a flight championship during the fall season. Blanco captured two titles at the Upstate Fall Classic and Winthrop Fall Shootout, while Dharni won at the Upstate Fall Classic.
In doubles competition, Upstate competed for the championship in two of the flights. In the A1 Doubles Flight, the duo of Ramon Simonetti and Carlos Tajes fell to James Madison's Robert Stirling and Miljan Ruzic 8-6. Dharni and Pedro Carvalho, playing in the consolation final of the A2 Doubles Flight, lost to James Madison's Brett Moorhead and Sebastian Salinas 8-3.
The Spartans have now concluded their fall season, and will begin the spring campaign Saturday, Jan. 18 at Tennessee.
