Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate men's basketball team puts the finishing touches on its season-opening six-game road trip this week when the Spartans head north to Kent, Ohio, to take part in the Coaches vs. Cancer Tournament hosted by Kent State University.
Upstate opens competition in the event Thursday afternoon at 5 p.m. when the Spartans face Niagara from the M.A.C. Center. It's the first time that Upstate will have ever faced Niagara and the first time the Spartans have ever played a school from the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.
The Spartans will continue play Friday night at 7:30 p.m. against tournament host Kent State and conclude their participation Saturday at 5 p.m. against Western Carolina. Upstate and Western Carolina will be meeting for the first time, while the Spartans defeated Kent State 73-58 in the only previous meeting in the 2012 College Insider Tournament.
Upstate enters play following a 74-65 setback at Tennessee Saturday night. The Spartans led by as many as 13 points and held a nine point lead with just over 12 minutes to play, but the Vols closed the game on a 26-8 run en route to the comeback victory.
Senior Torrey Craig scored a game-high 20 points against Tennessee and enters the week leading the A-Sun in scoring at 21.3 points per game. Craig is seeking to become just the second play in league history to lead the conference in scoring in three straight seasons.
Ty Greene poured in 15 points and tallied five rebounds and two assists against the Vols and stands third in the league with 17.7 points per game. Senior Ricardo Glenn also scores in double figures with 10.3 points per game.
