
Upstate Starts Five-Game Road Trip Monday at George Washington

Washington, D.C. – The USC Upstate women's basketball team kicks off a five-game road trip Monday evening as it takes on the George Washington Colonials at 7 p.m. inside the Charles E. Smith Center.
The Spartans are coming off a thrilling 58-57 last second victory over South Carolina State on Nov. 19 as Shelby Hicks made the game-winning basket with three-tenths of a second remaining. Upstate trailed by as many as 19 points at halftime, but limited S.C. State to just three field goals in the second half as it snapped a three-game losing streak.
USC Upstate enters the Monday night contest with a 3-3 record on the season. Sharmayne Edwards and Brittany Starling are both averaging in double-digits this season in scoring. Edwards currently leads the team with 13.3 points per game while Starling is chipping in 12.3 per contest. Starling also tops the team in rebounds per game with 7.0.
George Washington currently sits with a 2-1 record heading into the matchup with Upstate highlighted by a 75-72 victory over tenth-ranked California. Heading into this week George Washington was receiving votes in both the Associated Press and USA Today Coaches Polls.
The Colonials are led by second-year head coach Jonathan Tsipos. He is 16-17 in his two seasons with George Washington.
George Washington leads the all-time series over Upstate 1-0. The Colonials defeated the Spartans last season in Spartanburg by a score of 48-37.
Upstate returns to action Sunday, Dec. 1 when it travels to Bloomington, Ind. to face the Indiana Hoosiers at 2 p.m.
