Kiawah Island, S.C. – The USC Upstate men's golf team got three solid rounds en route to shooting a 305 on Monday in the second round of the Wendy's Kiawah Classic at the Turtle Point course at the Kiawah Island Golf Resort. The Spartans are 11th heading into the final round Tuesday.
While Ryan Cornfield shot a team-best 71, Adam Goins carded a 74 and Taylor White finished with a 76 on Monday, the Spartans couldn't put a fourth score in the 70s and shot 305 while counting Sebastian Lopez Bulla's 84. Trey Taylor, playing in his first collegiate tournament, carded an 86 Tuesday. Upstate is 11th in the field of 18 teams.
"It's disappointing that we couldn't capitalize on the good rounds from our top three players," said Upstate head coach Todd Lawton. "All of players need to focus on their strengths and play to them tomorrow and not fight against the weaknesses. We can do well if that happens."
South Carolina leads the tournament heading into the final round Tuesday. The Gamecocks own a 569 total. Marquette is second at 588 and is followed by Presbyterian (589), Missouri (592), Winthrop (593), Charleston Southern (594), Towson (596), Radford (596), Elon (598), Wisconsin (601), Upstate (602), Minnesota (606), Western Kentucky (609), Jacksonville State (609), Richmond (615), Campbell (618), Creighton (625) and George Washington (631). The Spartans are just eight shots out of a sixth-place finish and own a four stroke lead over Minnesota in 12th.
Cornfield was simply outstanding early on, recording birdies on four of his first six holes. He played his final 12 holes at 2-over but still came in at 1-under with a 71. Goins recovered from a double bogey on the eighth hole to play his final 10 holes 1-under for his 74. White played his final 11 holes at 1-over en route to a solid 76.
"Ryan has played a great tournament since his first nine Sunday and I am proud of the adjustments he has made," said Lawton. "Adam is becoming better at adapting his game every round to be successful and that is truly being a leader as a senior."
Lopez Bulla posted two birdies on the back nine to help Upstate stay in front of Minnesota by four shots, while Taylor played his final three holes at 1-under.
Goins is the top Spartan in the tournament, heading into the final round in 12th place with a 145 total. Cornfield is tied for 20th at 148. White is tied for 39th at 152. Lopez Bulla owns a 157 total, while Taylor stands at 172. Marquette's Nick Nelson shot a 67 Monday and leads the tournament with a 137 total.
