Elk Grove, Calif. – After turning in a tremendous effort, USC Upstate standout and Gaffney native Adam Goins finished second to lead the Spartan men's golf as the Sacramento State Invitational concluded Tuesday afternoon at Valley Hi Country Club.
Goins finished second by a single stroke. He made five birdies in his final round Tuesday, finishing with a 2-under-par 70 and a 54-hole total of 209 (-7). He finished second by a stroke behind tournament champion Glen Scher from UC Santa Barbara. Scher shot rounds of 67, 70 and 71 to win the title. Goins finished the tournament with 12 birdies.
"Adam fought hard and made all the adjustments shot-wise to compete for the win," said Upstate head coach Todd Lawton. "In the end, it wasn't enough to win, but to come here for the first time and do as well as he did is special and exciting."
Upstate shot a final round 290 to go along with a 299 and 283 to finish sixth with an 872 total. The Spartans took scores of 70 from Goins and Ryan Cornfield (Dudley, England), 73 from Brad Sill (Spartanburg, S.C.) and 77 from Brian Horton (Boiling Springs, S.C.).
"Our run toward a Top 4 finish came up short on the 16th hole today," said Lawton. "But, we battled to make four birdies on the 17th to move back to a sixth-place finish. This was a great field and fantastic venue. The staff at Sacramento State was great, as was the staff at Valley Hi. We competed proudly in unfamiliar territory."
Cornfield started his 2-under-par round strong, making birdie on five of his first seven holes. He finished the round with six birdies with two bogeys and a double. He climbed up the leaderboard and finished tied for 26th with a 220 total.
Sill was solid throughout the tournament. He made four birdies and finished tied for 17th after posting a 73 Tuesday and a 54-hole total of 218. Horton finished tied for 44th with a 225 total, while Matthew Hopper (Gaffney, S.C.) finished with a 240 total.
Behind the individual title run from Scher, UC Santa Barbara won the team championship with an 853 total. Cal State Fullerton was second at 861 and was followed by Chico State (865), Boise State (869), Southern Utah (869), Upstate (872), Sacramento State (873), Loyola Marymount (880), Houston Baptist (882), Texas-Pan American (895), Cal State Bakersfield (896), South Dakota (897), Seattle (903) and Nebraska-Omaha (920).
