Braselton, Ga. – Adam Goins shot a final round 73 to finish tied for ninth to lead the USC Upstate men's golf team as the Spartans moved up two positions on the leaderboard to finish seventh at the 2013 A-Sun Men's Golf Championship Tuesday afternoon.
Goins (Gaffney, S.C.) began the day with a birdie, made 15 pars and only had two bogeys to finish with a 73. He started the day in 17th and moved up eight positions to ninth place to finish the tournament.
"This was a good tournament for Adam," said Upstate head coach Todd Lawton. "He played very well, very steady today and it was good for him and us to get a Top 10 finish."
Goins led a team effort as Upstate began the day ninth but moved up two positions to seventh after shooting 300. The Spartans finished with a 926 total, just eight strokes back of a Top 5 effort.
North Florida shot a 291 on Tuesday and claimed the A-Sun Championship with an 881 total. ETSU was second at 895 and was followed by Kennesaw State (897), Jacksonville (911), Mercer (918), Florida Gulf Coast (924), Upstate (926), Lipscomb (929), Northern Kentucky (930) and Stetson (938).
"This tournament is so close and it is a challenge to get into the top four or five spots," said Lawton. "You can't win the tournament with one round, but you can put yourself in a position to have to battle back after one off round, which is what happened yesterday. We were very competitive today with three really good scores that enabled us to battle back. Overall, I am pleased that we were able to move up a couple of positions on the leaderboard. We were just too far behind after yesterday to make a bigger move."
Brian Horton (Boiling Springs, S.C.), playing in his final collegiate tournament, certainly made it count and was a big reason why Upstate was able to move up on the leaderboard. He made four birdies en route to matching Goins' 73 for the low round of the day for the Spartans. He birdied three of his last five holes, including the last hole of his career. He finished tied for 35th with a 237 total.
Ryan Cornfield (Dudley, England) turned in a solid debut in the A-Sun Championship. The freshman claimed a Top 20 effort, finishing tied for 19th with a 229 total. He carded a 74 on Tuesday with four birdies. Sebastian Lopez Bulla (Bogota, Colombia) also played his first A-Sun Championship and the freshman finished 44th with a 242 total. Sean Hassell (Walhalla, S.C.) carded an 80 for the fourth countable score on Tuesday.
North Florida's MJ Maguire shot a 68 in the final round Tuesday to win the individual championship by two strokes with a 215 total.
