
Upstate To Face South Carolina State, Gardner-Webb In Weekend Tournament

Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate women's soccer team looks to return to its winning way this weekend when the Spartans travel to Boiling Springs, N.C., to tangle with South Carolina State and Gardner-Webb in the 2013 Under Armor Border Classic from Greene-Harbison Field on the Gardner-Webb campus.
Upstate and South Carolina State will open the tournament Friday at 4:30 p.m. before Gardner-Webb hosts Chattanooga in the nightcap at 7 p.m. South Carolina State will battle Chattanooga Sunday at 1 p.m. before Upstate and Gardner-Webb put the finishing touches on the event with a 3 p.m. matchup.
Upstate (1-4-1) enters play Friday with a 1-4-1 overall record after falling 1-0 on the road Sunday at Presbyterian. South Carolina State begins the weekend having lost its last four games following a 1-0 setback to Emmanuel College Tuesday evening to fall to 3-5-0 overall. Upstate and South Carolina State will be meeting for the third time in the all-time series that is tied at one game apiece. It's the first time the two schools have faced each other on the pitch since 2009.
Gardner-Webb opens the weekend with a 1-3-1 record following a 2-1 loss to Wofford Sunday afternoon. The Bulldogs own a 7-0-0 record in the all-time series with Upstate that dates back to the 2000 season. Gardner-Webb is the fifth opponent from the Big South the Spartans have played this season, battling VMI, UNC Asheville, Coastal Carolina and Presbyterian earlier in the year.
