
Spartans Enjoy Success At Upstate Fall Classic

Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate men's tennis team enjoyed a great deal of success on the opening day of the USC Upstate Fall Classic from the USC Upstate Tennis Complex.
All five Spartans advanced to the quarterfinals of their respective single draws, highlighted by top-seeded and reigning A-Sun Player of the Year Matthias Kidler (Bremen, Germany). Kidler defeated Wofford's Trevor Gotkowski 7-5, 6-1 in the A draw and will face Ryan Miller of Presbyterian Saturday at 10:30 a.m.
Sophomore Ramon Simonetti (Passo Fundo, Brazil) also reached the quarterfinals of the A draw following his dominating 6-0, 6-3 victory over Gonzalo Asis of Presbyterian. Senior Yvon Haessig (Burgdof, Switzerland) was also triumphant in the A draw, besting Joel Cook of Furman 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 to qualify for the next round.
Freshman Pedro Carvalho defeated Joel Roberts of Presbyterian 7-5, 6-3 in draw B, while second-seeded and Upstate senior Gonzalo Blanco (Chascomus, Argentina) downed Wofford's Parks Thompson 6-4, 7-5 to advance to the quarterfinals.
In doubles play, the top-seeded duo of Kidler and Simonetti reached the semifinals of the A draw with an impressive 8-3 victory and will battle Cook and Jacob Behal of Furman Saturday at 9 a.m. Haessig and Blanco, who were the tournament's fourth seed, were upset 8-4 by Rob Galloway and Haris Poric of Wofford and will compete in the back draw on Saturday.
