Spartanburg, S.C. – USC Upstate senior Gonzalo Blanco (Chascomus, Argentina) and freshman Rajanuir Dharni (Mumbai, India) each claimed individual titles in singles action Sunday afternoon to cap an exciting weekend of tennis at the USC Upstate Fall Classic from the USC Upstate Tennis Center.
Blanco, who was seeded second in the B draw, opened the tournament with a 6-4, 7-5 victory over Parks Thompson of Wofford to advance to the quarterfinals. Blanco went on to oust Diego Manzanas of Presbyterian in the following round by a 6-3, 6-2 final score. In the semifinals, Blanco bested Jorge Wilton of Kennesaw State 6-2, 6-0 before claiming the individual title with a 6-4, 7-6 triumph over Furman's Ben Horst on Sunday.
Dharni turned in an impressive outing over the weekend in his first career action in a Spartan uniform. He began the tournament by beating Patrick Longest of Wofford 6-3, 6-2 to earn a spot in the semifinals, and continued his winning ways with a 7-5, 6-0 upset victory over third-seeded Jake Bouchillon of Kennesaw State. His path to the title of the C draw concluded with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Upstate sophomore and fourth-seeded Carlos Tajes.
Spartan senior Yvon Haessig (Burgdof, Switzerland) finished second overall in the A draw of the singles tournament and placed runner-up alongside Blanco in the A back draw of the doubles tournament.
USC Upstate returns to action Sept. 27-28 when the Spartans travel to Davidson, N.C., to take part in the Davidson Invitational.
