Florence, S.C. – The USC Upstate men's golf team opened the 2013-14 season in grand fashion, firing a school record 11-under-par 277 in the second round of the day at the Springhill Suites Intercollegiate at the Country Club of South Carolina. The Spartans own the overnight lead heading into Tuesday's final round.
"This was a great way to start our season," said Upstate head coach Todd Lawton. "It takes great individual efforts to post low team scores and we got them today. We saw a lot of birdies and we hit so many good tee shots to put us in position. We executed very well."
Upstate opened the tournament with a 284 in the first round of the day Monday and owned a two-stroke lead heading into the second round of the day. That is when the magic happened. The Spartans fired on all cylinders and turned in a 277 to finish 11-under-par in the round on the par-72 course. The 277 matched the 277 the 2011-12 Spartans recorded at the Rutgers Invitational, but the Rutgers tournament was played on a par-71 course and was 7-under-par. The 277 fired Monday was on a par-72 course.
Upstate owns the lead heading into the final round on Tuesday. The Spartans have a 561 total and lead by eight strokes over Samford at 569. Francis Marion, the host of the tournament, is third at 570 and is followed by Wofford (572), Elon (574), Presbyterian (575), Radford (578), Jacksonville (585), Appalachian State (585), Longwood (585), Georgia College (590) and George Mason (597).
Ryan Cornfield (Dudley, England) fired rounds of 69 and 67 for a 136 total and is tied atop the leaderboard with Wofford's Brannan Hudson. Adam Goins (Gaffney, S.C.) is tied for fifth with a 139 total after rounds of 71 and 68. Danny Brock (Simpsonville, S.C.) and Taylor White (Duncan, S.C.) are tied for 14th with 143 totals, giving the Spartans four players in the Top 15 in the tournament. Brock shot rounds of 71 and 72, while White, playing in his first college tournament as a freshman, shot 73 and 70. Sebastian Lopez Bulla (Bogota, Colombia) is tied for 48th with a 150 total after back-to-back rounds of 75.
"Adam and Ryan were leaders all last year and they have stepped up their games another notch," said Lawton. "I am very proud of Danny stepping in so ready to play. Taylor was composed and aggressive throughout the first day of his first collegiate tournament. Overall, Sebastian played well and I know he will be ready to play tomorrow."
