Camden, S.C. – After opening the Camden Collegiate Invitational with an even-par 70 in the first round on Saturday, USC Upstate standout junior Ryan Cornfield fired a school record 65 in the second round of the day and is in second place heading into Sunday's final round at the Camden Country Club.
Cornfield's round of 65 breaks the previous low round of 66 shot by six different Spartans. At 5-under, it is the second-lowest round under-par in school history, trailing the 6-under 66's by McKenzie Oref (Sea Trail Intercollegiate, Sept. 24, 2010) and Brad Sill (Forest Hills Intercollegiate, Feb. 23, 2013). The 5-under score is tied with four other Spartans for second place on the under-par list at Upstate.
Cornfield opened with a 70, finishing with five birdies, five bogeys and eight pars. He was simply sensational in the second round. He made four birdies on the back nine and three on the front to go along with two bogeys to shoot 5-under. He is second behind Wofford's Brannan Hudson, who stands 10-under for the tournament.
In addition to the strong play from Cornfield, Taylor White also turned in a standout first day for Upstate. He posted two birdies in the first round to shoot 1-over 71 and totaled four birdies to shoot 2-under 68 in the second round. At 1-under for the tournament, he enters the final round tied for third.
"It was simply an incredible effort from Ryan and Taylor today," said Upstate head coach Todd Lawton. "This golf is so demanding of placement and precision. Both trusted their games and played all 36 holes patiently."
Upstate opened the tournament with rounds of 295 and 290 and stands 12th with a 585 total. Wofford leads the tournament at 565 and is followed by South Carolina (572), Radford (573), Furman (574), USC Aiken (577), Charleston Southern (578), Presbyterian (580), Coastal Carolina (580), Gardner-Webb (581), Francis Marion (582), Davidson (584), Upstate (585), Appalachian State (592), Elon (598) and High Point (619).
"It is disappointing to be in the place we are in considering the play of Ryan and Taylor," said Lawton. "Tomorrow is a day that we hope to feed on what our best did today and learn from the errors from our guys who struggled. We play for a team score, but that is certainly the sum of individual efforts."
Upstate counted rounds of 70 from Cornfield, 71 from White and a pair of 77's from Sebastian Lopez Bulla and Sean Hassell to shoot 295 in the first round. Cornfield's 65 paced the Spartans in the second as the team counted his round along with White's 68, Lopez Bulla's 77 and Hassell's 80. Lopez Bulla posted four birdies during his two rounds Saturday, while Hassell carded three. Tom Schofield shot rounds of 82 and 88 with two birdies in his collegiate debut.
The teams will resume play in the final round Sunday morning at the Camden Country Club.
