Camden, S.C. – USC Upstate standout junior Ryan Cornfield shot a 2-over-par 72 in the final round of the Camden Collegiate Invitational Sunday afternoon and finished tied for second place after a strong effort in the 54-hole tournament at the Camden Country Club.
Cornfield's 72 came one day and one round after breaking the school's all-time record with a 65 in the second round of the tournament. The 5-under-par 65 also ranks second all-time on the school's round under-par list. He made one birdie and 14 pars in his round on Sunday to finish tied for second with a 3-under-par 207 total.
"The conditions were much more difficult this morning than yesterday and hole locations were tough. Ryan did a tremendous job handling them and came away with a great round and tournament finish," said Upstate head coach Todd Lawton.
Upstate shot a 297 in the final round and finished tied for ninth with an 882 total. South Carolina, the host of the tournament, won the event with an 847 total and was followed on the leaderboard by Wofford (848), Furman (865), Charleston Southern (867), Radford (872), Presbyterian (877), Coastal Carolina (877), USC Aiken (880), Upstate (882), Gardner-Webb (882), Davidson (885), Francis Marion (886), Elon (895), Appalachian State (899) and High Point (922). Wofford's Brannan Hudson won the individual championship with a 201 total.
Shaking off the nerves from his first day of competition on the college level on Sunday, freshman Tom Schofield rallied to post the second-lowest score of the day for Upstate. He shot a 73 and made three birdies during his round. The Spartans also counted scores of 76 from Taylor White and Sebastian Lopez Bulla. White made three birdies during his round and finished tied for 13th with a 215 total in a solid effort.
"I am proud of Tom's round today," said Lawton. "He showed that a bad day (Saturday) can be left behind and sometimes that's tough to do in your first tournament."
