
Spartans Finish Fall Season Strong at UNCW Invite

Wilmington, N.C. – Jamie Yates was a perfect 3-0 in singles play to lead the USC Upstate men's tennis team to a strong showing at the UNC Wilmington Invite from the UNCW Tennis Complex in the final tournament of the fall.
Yates opened play Friday with a 6-0, 7-5 victory over Caleb Troy of the University of Richmond before turning in a pair of victories on Sunday to finish with a flawless record. Yates posted a 0-6, 7-6, 7-5 victory over Xander Veys of UNC Wilmington in his first match before ending the day with a 4-6, 7-5, 10-7 win over Dillon Segur of Liberty.
Freshman Felix Ewers finished the weekend with a 2-1 record in singles play, opening the invitational with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Stathi Kyriakides of Richmond on Friday. Following a setback to Javier Restrepo of UNC Wilmington, Ewers responded with a 6-1, 2-6, 10-5 win over David Bush of Liberty Sunday afternoon.
Pedro Carvalho defeated Dylan Trent of Richmond 6-2, 6-3 in his opening match of the weekend, and later capped the event with a 5-7, 6-4, 10-5 win over Jason Burgess of Liberty to finish the weekend with a pair of victories.
In doubles play, junior Ramon Simonetti and freshman Matt Bennion were a perfect 2-0 to lead the Spartans in victories. The duo opened the tournament with an 8-4 win over Zach Hublitz and Andres Torres of UNC Wilmington on Friday, and followed that performance on Sunday by besting Noah Fenton and James Aronson of Richmond 8-7 (3).
Upstate opens its spring schedule Jan. 22 at 2 p.m. when the Spartans welcome Gardner-Webb to the USC Upstate Tennis Complex.
