Kiawah Island, S.C. – USC Upstate got rounds of 72 from Ryan Cornfield and Sebastian Lopez Bulla and shot 296 in the second round of the Wendy's Kiawah Classic Monday afternoon on the Turtle Point Course at the Kiawah Island Golf Resort.
Upstate's 296 on Monday was five strokes better than the 301 it posted in the first round Sunday. The Spartans counted scores of 72 from Cornfield and Lopez Bulla, 73 from Taylor White and 79 from Andrew Purcell. The Spartans will enter Tuesday's final round in 11th place but well within striking distance of a strong finish.
"We had three very solid rounds today and it was a respectable day," said Upstate head coach Todd Lawton. "I saw lots of fight on a day that conditions completely changed. The field has bunched a lot and we are just outside a very good finish. We need a couple more birdies tomorrow from each player and a good break here and there."
Winthrop owns the lead heading into the final round, posting a 36-hole total of 583. The Eagles are followed by Missouri (587), Jacksonville State (590), GRU Augusta (590), Georgia Southern (590), Presbyterian (591), Richmond (592), Radford (593), Marquette (593), Charleston Southern (593), Upstate (597), George Washington (599), Gardner-Webb (601), Coastal Carolina (606), Temple (607), High Point (612), Creighton (614), Western Kentucky (619), Appalachian State (624) and Bethune-Cookman (633).
Upstate is just 10 strokes out of second and seven out of third place with one round to go. Jacksonville State's Tomasz Anderson owns the individual lead with a 140 total.
A day after making 17 birdies in the first round, Upstate posted 15 birdies on Monday. The Spartans need just four more birdies to reach its season high of 36 made at the Camden Collegiate Invitational.
Cornfield posted three birdies, three bogeys and 12 pars in what was a very consistent round throughout the day Monday. At even-par 144, he is tied for sixth on the individual leaderboard and is looking for his fourth Top 10 finish of the season.
"Ryan continues to show the effort and precision that leads us most rounds," said Lawton. "His play inspires his teammates and that is worthy of praise."
Lopez Bulla made four birdies and an eagle during his round to post 72, which is tied for his lowest round of the season. He is tied for 30th at 149. Taylor White was solid all day as well and posted a 73 with three birdies. Purcell shot 79 and made two birdies, while Tom Schofield shot 86 with three birdies.
