Augusta, Ga. – Led by a third-place finish by Adam Goins, the USC Upstate men's golf team finished second at the Forest Hills Collegiate Saturday afternoon at the Forest Hills Country Club.
Upstate opened the 36-hole, one-day tournament with a 298, the only team in the field to break 300 in the first round. However, GRU Augusta, formerly Augusta State and winners of two national championships in the last five years, shot a 291 in the second round and won the team championship by seven strokes over the Spartans.
"We played very consistent today. We had a bunch of good scores, but didn't have that one round in either round that stood out. GRU Augusta got that one round that made the difference. We played with them on their home course and did well. Overall, our games are solid and consistent. All of our players have to be capable of having that breakthrough round that allows us to move up on the leaderboard," said Upstate head coach Todd Lawton.
GRU Augusta finished the tournament with a 594 total. Upstate was second at 601 and was followed by Gardner-Webb (608), Stetson (609), Northern Illinois (628), Youngstown State (632) and N.C. Central (663).
Goins shot back-to-back rounds of 74 to finish third with a 148 total. It was his fifth Top 10 finish in six tournaments this season. Ryan Cornfield was the second Spartan to finish in the Top 10, finishing tied for eighth with rounds of 75 and 75 for a 150 total. Taylor White gave the Spartans a third Top 10 finisher, recording rounds of 74 and 77 for a 151 total and finishing tied for 10th.
Sebastian Lopez Bulla shot rounds of 75 and 77 for a 152 total and claimed 16th. Trey Taylor shot rounds of 80 and 81 to finish tied for 31st to round out the scoring.
Sean Hassell, playing in his first tournament this season, played as an individual in the tournament with his score not counting toward Upstate's team score. It certainly would have helped as the junior shot rounds of 76 and 73 for a 149 total. He claimed a tie for fourth.
GRU Augusta's Meechai Padung shot rounds of 74 and 69 to win the individual championship with a 143 total.
