Macon, Ga. – USC Upstate senior Yvon Haessig has been selected as the Atlantic Sun Men's Tennis Player of the Week, the league office announced Wednesday.
Haessig turned in a perfect 4-0 record last weekend in leading Upstate to conference road wins at Lipscomb and Northern Kentucky.
Haessig opened play with an 8-7 victory in doubles action playing alongside Ramon Simonetti from the No. 2 position. The duo knocked off Daniel Hernandez and Rob Mitchell of Lipscomb to clinch the point for the Spartans and provide a lead they would never surrender. Haessig went on to defeat Miguel Cortez 6-2, 6-3 from the No. 5 singles position to clinch the match en route to a 6-1 win for the Spartans.
In the following match at Northern Kentucky, Haessig and Simonetti were once again victorious in doubles action, this time downing Jody Maginley and Christopher Angulo 8-3 to secure the point and put Upstate ahead 1-0. Haessig capped his perfect weekend by posting a 7-6, 6-1 win over Angulo from the No. 4 singles position to help Upstate secure a 5-2 win over the Norse.
"Yvon is one of the hardest workers on our team and it was great to see him come through in two big conference matches," Upstate head coach Oliver Trittenwein said. "I'm very proud to see him earn such a coveted award like this."
Haessig is the first Spartan to be named the A-Sun Men's Tennis Player of the Week since former Upstate standout Ramiro Blanco earned the distinction March 9, 2011.
Haessig will look to continue his hot streak this weekend when the Spartans hit the road for matches at North Florida and Georgia Southern. Upstate will face the Ospreys Saturday at 2 p.m. and the Eagles Sunday at 2 p.m.
