
Six Spartans Advance on Day One of USC Upstate Fall Classic

Spartanburg, S.C. – Six Spartans advanced in their respective draws to highlight competition on day one of the USC Upstate Fall Classic from the USC Upstate Tennis Complex.
Junior Jamie Yates turned in a 6-3, 6-2 singles victory over Matthew Johnson of Kennesaw State in the green draw and will face top-seeded Daniel Kripak of UNC Asheville on Saturday. Sophomore Pedro Carvalho defeated Alex Crocker of UNC Asheville 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 in the white draw to setup a match with No. 3 seed Joel Roberts of Presbyterian on day two.
Newcomer John Giakoumakis downed Patrick Longest of Wofford 6-2, 6-3 in the black draw in his Upstate debut. Giakoumakis is scheduled to face No. 2 seed Ryan Miller of Presbyterian Saturday in round two.
In doubles action, Carvalho and teammate Rajanvir Dharni advanced in the white draw following a 7-6 (7-4) victory over Alex Pena and Drew Wendel of Kennesaw State. The second-seeded tandem of Ramon Simonetti and Viktor Selander also moved on in the white draw after earning a 6-4 victory over Luke Hoover of Furman and Evan Holvoet of Kennesaw State.
Day two resumes Saturday morning at 9 a.m. with doubles action. Admission to all USC Upstate tennis events is free.
