
Three Spartans Capture Titles at Upstate Fall Classic

Spartanburg, S.C. – Three members of the USC Upstate men's tennis team captured titles on Sunday to highlight competition on the final day of the USC Upstate Fall Classic from the USC Upstate Tennis Complex.
Second-seeded Viktor Selander turned in a 6-4, 6-4 victory over top-seeded Daniel Kripak of UNC Asheville in the singles green draw to cap a perfect 3-0 record in the bracket. Selander opened play with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Reid Dillon of UNC Asheville on Saturday before knocking off No. 3 seed Manuel Castellanos of Kennesaw State in the semifinals.
Selander also earned a title in the doubles white draw playing alongside teammate Ramon Simonetti. The duo began the tournament with a 6-4 win over Luke Hoover of Furman and Evan Holvoet of Kennesaw State in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, Selander and Simonetti posted a 6-0 victory over Thomas Orestis-Panoulas and John Schubel of UNC Asheville before claiming a 6-1 win over Ben Kelly and Ryan Miller of Presbyterian in the finals.
Freshman Felix Ewers suffered a 4-6, 6-3, 3-6 loss to John Schubel of UNC Asheville in the opening round of the single black draw on Friday, but battled his way back to win two straight matches in the back draw to claim the individual title. Ewers defeated Diego Manzanas of Presbyterian 6-4, 6-1 on Saturday and completed the comeback with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Will Baird of Presbyterian on Sunday.
Upstate returns to the court Sept. 27-28 when the Spartans travel to Davidson, N.C., to take part in the Davidson Invitational.
