Spartanburg, S.C. – After opening the season with four straight tournaments, USC Upstate heads to Presbyterian College Tuesday evening to face the Blue Hose in its first midweek match of the season at 6 p.m.
The Spartans are off to their best start since 2006 as they are 9-5 overall after winning three of four matches last weekend at The Spartanburg Courtyard Classic hosted by Wofford. Upstate dropped its tournament opener to Gardner-Webb, but responded with three straight victories over Wofford, Tennessee Tech and North Carolina A&T. Kayla Eversgerd and Emily Koelling were selected to the All-Tourmament Team, as Eversgerd had four double-doubles and Koelling led the team with 14 blocks.
Eversgerd was honored for her performance Monday afternoon as she became the first USC Upstate player since Holly Mauldin in 2008 to be named A-Sun Player of the Week.
Kayla McAvoy leads the Spartan offense this season with 148 kills, while Eversgerd averages a team-best 3.23 kills per set. Lexi Gober has dished out 541 assists through the 14 matches and Kaleigh Kelley is first on the team with 227 digs. Koelling's 24 blocks (seven solo, 17 assisted) also lead the team in that category. In the A-Sun, Gober is first in assists and service aces, and eighth in digs; Kelley is first in digs; McAvoy is sixth in kills; Eversgerd is fifth in kills per set and tenth in digs; and Weiss is third in service aces and seventh in digs. Upstate leads the conference in kills, assists and digs, and is third in service aces.
Presbyterian College is under the direction of second-year head coach Korrinn Burgess, who previously spent one season as the coach at Spartanburg Methodist College. The Blue Hose are 4-7 this season with wins over North Carolina Central, Wofford, Davidson and Hampton. Rachel Halls is the only PC player in triple-digit kills with 135. Ashtin Frank has dished out 375 assists while Mary Trimpe leads the team in digs with 183.
The Spartans hold a 30-22 lead all-time in the series with Presbyterian College, which began back in 1977. Upstate will be facing the Blue Hose in Clinton for the first time since 2009 when PC won 3-0. The Spartans defeated Presbyterian College 3-2 last season in Spartanburg during their non-conference finale.
