
Yates Leads Upstate on Day One of Davidson Invitational

Davidson, N.C. – Jamie Yates was a perfect 2-0 in singles matches and 1-0 in doubles play to lead USC Upstate on the opening day of the Davidson Invitational from the Covington Tennis Courts.
Yates and partner Pedro Carvalho posted an 8-6 victory over Paul Cisti and Alex Calott of Charlotte in the opening match of the day. The 49ers, however, were victorious in the other two doubles matches to take the point and go ahead 1-0.
In singles play, Yates turned in a 6-2, 6-1 win over Jack Williams from the No. 2 position, while freshman Felix Ewers downed Cisti 6-2, 6-3 from the No. 5 position. Charlotte picked up wins from the No. 1, 3 and 4 positions to earn a 4-2 victory.
Yates went on to post a 7-5, 6-4 victory over J.B. Gough of Davidson at No. 2 to help the Spartans to a 3-3 tie with the Wildcats after the completion of singles play. Upstate and Davidson will continue with doubles play Sunday at 11 a.m.
Ramon Simonetti earned a 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 over Artem Khrapko from the No. 1 position, while Ewers bested Jordan Hart at No. 5 to account for the final two points against the Wildcast.
Upstate will also face Appalachian State Sunday afternoon after the conclusion of its match with Davidson.
