
Upstate Swept on the Road at Florida Gulf Coast

Fort Myers, Fla. – Leigh Pudwell recorded a double-double of 10 kills and 15 digs to lead the Florida Gulf Coast Eagles to a 3-0 (22-25, 22-25, 17-25) victory over the USC Upstate volleyball team Saturday evening in A-Sun play from Alico Arena.
Upstate falls to 12-9 on the season and 0-5 in league play, while Florida Gulf Coast improves to 13-7 overall and 4-1 in the conference.
Callie Yeargin and Emily Koelling each had eight kills to lead the Spartans offensively while Madison Haake dished out 14 assists to go with eight digs. Kaleigh Kelly finished with a season-high 21 digs.
Pudwell collected a match-high 10 kills along with Eleonora Kazarian. Maggie Rick contributed 36 assists and Vanessa Benke was one of three Eagle players to post double-digit digs with a team-best 17.
Florida Gulf Coast took an early 4-1 lead in the first set but Upstate responded with an 8-1 run to go ahead 9-5 on Koelling's kill. The Eagles answered to take the lead back at 12-11 following a kill from Amanda Carroll. The teams exchanged points for the next eight plays until Florida Gulf Coast scored three straight to go ahead 18-15 capped by a Pudwell kill. The Spartans rallied to within one, 21-20, on Pudwell's service error, only to see FGCU score four of the next six points to win 25-22.
The Eagles took the second set by an identical 25-22 score to increase their lead in the match to 2-0. Upstate split the opening 10 points with Florida Gulf Coast and evened the score at 5-5 on a service ace by Lexi Gober. The service ace sparked a run by the Spartans allowing them to go in front 10-6 finished off by Koelling's kill. The Eagles answered back to retake the lead 12-11 with a kill by Carroll. With the score tied at 15-15, FGCU recorded four consecutive points to lead 19-15. The Spartans managed to trim their deficit to 21-20 late, but Florida Gulf Coast would win the set following an Upstate attack error.
The Spartans led by as many as seven, 12-5, to begin the third set after Brianna Tellschow picked up back-to-back kills. Kayla Eversgerd allowed Upstate to maintain a 15-11 lead midway through the frame, but the Eagles fought back to even the score at 15-15 after a Spartan ball handling error. Florida Gulf Coast scored nine points in a row for a 20-15 advantage, and concluded by picking up the last four to win the set 25-17 and take the match 3-0.
Upstate travels to Lipscomb on Friday, Oct. 16 to square off with the Bisons at 7:30 p.m. EST.
