
Gethin, Winegarner Receive A-Sun Postseason Recognition

Macon, Ga. – USC Upstate women's soccer players Haley Gethin and Kate Winegarner were honored by the Atlantic Sun Conference on Thursday afternoon as both garnered postseason recognition from the league.
Gethin was named Second Team All-Conference for the second straight season and Winegarner was a unanimous selection to the All-Freshman Team.
"Anytime players get recognized for postseason awards, it is fantastic," said Upstate head coach Abby Minihan. "It is great for the individual for their impact on the team and for the team with their support for those individuals. Kate and Haley have earned these awards because of their performance and ability, and we are happy for them."
Gethin, a senior midfielder from Cocoa Beach, Fla., played in all 18 games this season for Upstate with 15 starts. She ranked third on the team with three goals, two assists and eight points. Gethin compiled her first career hat trick in the Spartans 5-0 victory over The Citadel on Aug. 23 to tally six points. She became just the fourth Upstate player in school history to score three goals in a game, and her six points are tied for fourth-most in program history. Gethin also added one assist each in a tie with Alabama State on Aug. 28 and the Spartans conference-opening victory at NJIT on Sept. 26.
Winegarner, a forward from Bethlehem, Ga., started in all 18 games during her freshman campaign. She tied for ninth in the A-Sun this season in assists, tied for 10th in goals and was 11th in points. Winegarner led the team in points with 11, and tied for the team-lead with four goals and three assists. The freshman recorded one game-winning goal which came in a 2-0 victory at NJIT on Sept. 26 to open the conference season. Winegarner collected three points in a 5-0 win over The Citadel on Aug. 23 with her first collegiate goal and assist. She also scored goals against Presbyterian College and UNC Asheville, while adding assists versus Alabama State and Francis Marion.
Gethin is the first Upstate player in school history to earn multiple A-Sun All-Conference honors and Winegarner is the fourth to be voted to the All-Freshman Team.
Florida Gulf Coast forward Tabby Tindell was a unanimous selection for A-Sun Player of the Year while her teammate Emma Blackwell earned Defensive Player of the Year accolades. FGCU head coach Jim Blankenship was tabbed the A-Sun Coach of the Year. The A-Sun Goalkeeper and Freshman of the Year awards went to Anna Buhigas and Maycie McKoy of Lipscomb.
