Greenville, S.C. – Carson Cross struck out 10 hitters over six innings to lead UConn to a 7-3 victory over USC Upstate Saturday in the First Pitch Invitational from Fluor Field.

Cross improved to 4-1 after allowing two runs on four hits. Trevor Holmes pitched the seventh inning and Devin Over struck out four over the final two innings in relief of Cross.

Upstate starting pitcher Brian Boocock (3-2) surrendered six runs on seven hits in 3.2 innings of mound work and suffered the loss. Richie Lacell pitched the final three innings and struck out five and held UConn to just one hit.

UConn designated hitter Joe Deroche-Duffin put the Huskies ahead 3-0 in the first inning when he connected for his third home run of the season. UConn tacked on a fourth run in the third inning on an RBI single from catcher Max McDowell.

Upstate pushed a run across in the fourth inning when James Fowlkes scored from second on a fielding error by UConn shortstop Aaron Hill. The Huskies used a sacrifice fly from Bobby Melley and an RBI single by McDowell in the bottom half to open up a 6-1.

Fowlkes delivered an RBI single in the fifth with a shot to left field to drive in Jordan Ford from third. Ford drew a walk to open the inning and moved to third on a throwing error by second baseman Vinny Siena.

Deroche-Duffin scored his second run of the game when he stole home in the bottom of the fifth to put UConn ahead 7-2.

Fowlkes registered his second RBI of the game in the seventh inning after plating Daniel Fickas from third on a sacrifice fly to centerfield.

Upstate returns to the diamond Sunday with games against Michigan State (3 p.m.) and Furman (7 p.m.) from Fluor Field.
