SPARTANBURG, S.C. – USC Upstate baseball head coach Kane Sweeney has announced the Spartans' 2027 schedule, featuring a challenging non-conference slate highlighted by matchups against several of college baseball's most recognizable programs, three games at professional ballparks, and a competitive Big South Conference schedule.
The Spartans are set to open their 2027 campaign on February 19 with a three-game series against Florida State in Tallahassee, Florida, kicking off a demanding stretch of five consecutive games against Power Four opponents. Upstate will also face South Carolina, Cincinnati, North Carolina, West Virginia, Georgia, and Clemson throughout the season as part of a schedule designed to prepare the program for another postseason run.
The 2027 slate features 56 regular-season contests, including 26 home games, three games at professional ballparks, and 24 Big South Conference matchups. "Seems like I say this every year, but we have put together another challenging schedule," said Sweeney. "Our first five games come against Power Four opponents, and we open the season down in Tallahassee against what I consider one of the blue bloods of college baseball. I anticipate an incredible atmosphere, and we're going right into the fire to start the year. We're going to find out a lot about ourselves early, and that's exactly what we want. We've structured our schedule similarly over the last couple of years, and we feel like it has helped prepare us for conference play and the postseason."
After opening weekend in Tallahassee, the Spartans then return to the Upstate for a meeting with in-state opponent South Carolina on February 23 at Fluor Field in Greenville, South Carolina, before welcoming Cincinnati to Spartanburg for their home opener on February 24.
The Spartans will host Maine for a three-game weekend series and the OneSpartanburg Inc, Classic from February 26-28 before traveling to Chapel Hill for a March 2 matchup against North Carolina.
Upstate continues its early-season road swing with a three-game series at Austin Peay from March 5-7 before welcoming West Virginia to the Upstate for two midweek contests. The Spartans will face the Mountaineers at Fifth Third Park on March 9 before hosting them at Harley Park on March 10.
The non-conference schedule continues with a three-game road series at ETSU from March 12-14 and a midweek trip to Stetson on March 16.
"We're going to North Carolina for the first time since I've been here, we have West Virginia coming in for two midweek games, and we're heading back to Georgia," Sweeney added. "Those are some of the biggest brands in college baseball, and our guys embrace the challenge and the exposure that comes with playing those programs. The great thing about this year's schedule is that we get to bring some of those teams right here to Spartanburg."
Big South Conference play begins on March 19, when the Spartans welcome Presbyterian College to Spartanburg for a three-game series running through March 21.
Following their conference opener, the Spartans will face Wofford at Fifth Third Park on March 23 before traveling to UNC Asheville for the Ingles I-26 Rivalry and their first Big South road series from March 25-27. Upstate then returns home to face College of Charleston on March 30 before hosting Longwood for a three-game conference series from April 2-4.
The month of April presents another demanding stretch for the Spartans, beginning with a road matchup against Charlotte on April 6. With an open weekend in Big South play, Upstate will travel to William & Mary for a three-game non-conference series from April 9-11.
The Spartans then head to Athens, Georgia, for a matchup against the Bulldogs on April 13 before resuming conference play at High Point from April 16-18.
Upstate's challenging midweek schedule continues with a trip to Clemson on April 20, followed by a three-game Big South series at Gardner-Webb from April 23-25. The Spartans close out the month with a home contest against Western Carolina on April 27 before beginning a three-game non-conference series at home against UNC Wilmington on April 30.
The series against UNCW concludes on May 2, leading into the final month of regular-season action. Upstate will travel to Western Carolina on May 4 before welcoming Winthrop for a three-game Big South series from May 7-9.
The Spartans then host crosstown rival Wofford on May 11 before closing out their home conference schedule against Radford from May 14-16.
Upstate concludes the 2027 regular season with a three-game road series against Charleston Southern from May 21-23, setting the stage for the Big South Conference Tournament, scheduled for May 26-29 in Asheville, North Carolina.
Throughout the season, the Spartans will face a combination of nationally recognized opponents, regional rivals, and familiar conference foes as they continue building the program's reputation on the national stage.
"This is the type of schedule our program has become accustomed to," Sweeney said. "We have no fear, we don't back down, and we'll play anybody. I think our players, our staff, and our fans have a lot of reasons to be excited about this upcoming season. This is the type of schedule that players, recruits, and fans want to see. When you're trying to establish yourself as a national brand, this is what you have to do."
The Spartans will look to build on the program's continued growth under Sweeney as they prepare for another season of high-level competition and pursue another Big South Conference championship and NCAA Regional bid.
