Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate men's tennis team puts the finishing touches on the month of March beginning Wednesday at 2 p.m. when the Spartans host Elon from the USC Upstate Tennis Complex. Upstate also faces road matches at North Florida Saturday at 2 p.m. and Georgia Southern Sunday at 2 p.m.
Upstate is coming off a successful weekend that saw the Spartans post a 4-1 victory over Stetson to move into fourth place in the league standings heading into the second week of A-Sun play. Spartans Ramon Simonetti, Felix Ewers and Ignacio Garrido each posted wins in doubles and singles play to help Upstate to the win.
Simonetti enters the week with a team-leading six singles victories and has won his last two doubles matches playing alongside Jamie Yates. Senior Viktor Selander ranks second on the team with five singles wins, while Yates and Garrido are tied for third with three wins apiece.
Garrido and Matt Bennion have won a team-high five doubles matches.
"We are happy to be hosting a great tennis program like Elon," USC Upstate head coach Oliver Trittenwein said. "We have a history of very competitive matches in the past, so this will be a great opportunity for us against a quality non-conference opponent."
Elon is 6-9 overall and has won two of its last three matches, but are 0-4 on the road thus far this season. The Phoenix face College of Charleston Tuesday before their match with the Spartans.
North Florida sits atop the A-Sun standings following wins over Lipscomb and Northern Kentucky last weekend. The Ospreys are 13-4 overall and are a perfect 6-0 at home.
"We hope to come away from the Elon match with a win and use that momentum Saturday when we face one of the top teams in our conference," Trittenwein said.
Georgia Southern has lost its last three matches and opens the week with a 5-9 overall record. The Eagles are just 1-4 at home this season and have not won at the Wallis Tennis Center since defeating Alabama State 6-1 on Jan. 25.
