Greenville, S.C. – Ryan Cornfield shot an even-par 72 in the final round of the Furman Intercollegiate Sunday afternoon at the Furman University Golf Course to finish tied for 11th on the individual leaderboard.
Upstate used solid rounds from Cornfield, Taylor White and Sebastian Lopez Bulla to shoot 300 in the final round. The Spartans finished 14th in the 18-team field. Upstate counted scores of 72 from Cornfield, 73 from White, 75 from Lopez Bulla and 80 from Trey Taylor to shoot 300 in the final round. Tom Schofield turned in an 83, while Andrew Purcell shot 77 with two birdies while playing as an individual.
"Our top three played well today in the cold weather and some wind," said Upstate head coach Todd Lawton. "Oour inability to get a solid fourth score got us in a tight field where we were close to a strong tournament finish being just five strokes out of the Top 10."
Cornfield got off to a slow start by making bogey on two of his first three holes. He righted the ship, though, with five consecutive pars before getting back to even for the round and the tournament with back-to-back birdies on his ninth and tenth holes. He bogeyed his 13th and 16th holes to move back to 2-over, but birdied his final two holes to shoot 72 and finish the tournament at even-par.
White topped the team with five birdies on his day en route to shooting 73. He made four birdies alone on the front nine. Lopez Bulla was solid throughout his round. He played the front nine at 1-over and the back nine in 2-over to shoot 75. He made three birdies in his round. Taylor birdied two holes on the front nine to play the front at 3-over en route to his 80. In all, Upstate made 16 birdies on the day and 40 in the tournament. It was the second-highest birdie total of the season.
"Ryan had another memorable finish when he birdied his last two holes and Taylor's four birdies in a row were fun to watch," said Lawton.
Georgia State shot a 288 on Sunday to win the team championship with a 6-under-par 858 total. The Panthers won by 16 strokes. Jacksonville was second at 874 and was followed by Troy (875), Francis Marion (876), Temple (876), USC Aiken (877), Western Carolina (887), Virginia Tech (888), Chattanooga (891), Davidson (892), Akron (892), Wofford (893), Furman (893), Upstate (896), Gardner-Webb (902), Marshall (904), Samford (915) and Presbyterian (917).
Temple's Brandon Matthews won medalist honors at 10-under for the tournament.
