Laurens, S.C. – Several members of the USC Upstate men's basketball team and coaching staff paid a visit to the Laurens Family YMCA Friday afternoon to speak to a large group of children about the important of teamwork and education.
Spartan head coach Eddie Payne was the first to address the audience, while assistant coaches Kente' Hart and Josh Chavis followed with words of inspiration.
"We had a great day today at the Laurens Family YMCA," Payne said. "It's always good to talk to young people, and it's good for our players to express the types of sentiments about what it takes to be successful and persevere."
Spartans Marvin Smith, Michael Buchanan, Jacob Schulte, Damien Goodwin and Deion Holmes all spoke and provided background information, words of encouragement and anecdotes about overcoming adversity.
"It was a great opportunity to reach out to kids in the community and teach them about different aspects of sports and life," Schulte said. "The excitement on their faces all afternoon was priceless."
The visit concluded with basketball drills and teaching opportunities inside the gymnasium.
