
Spartans Shine at USC Upstate Fall Classic

Spartanburg, S.C. – Felix Ewers and Matt Bennion each won three matches to lead USC Upstate on the opening day of the USC Upstate Fall Classic.
Ewers and Bennion won a pair of doubles matches to reach the semifinals of the white draw. The duo opened play with a 6-3 victory over Olly Cull and Daniel Kripak of UNC Asheville before knocking off top-seeded Stefan Rhodes and Alex Steryous of Furman 6-3 in the quarterfinals.
The Spartan combo of Ramon Simonetti and Ignacio Garrido defeated Josh Swindler and Henry Pattern of UNC Asheville 6-2 in the quarterfinals to secure a spot in the semifinals against Brett Landau and Alex Croker of UNC Asheville.
In singles play, Ewers defeated Swindler 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 in the green draw to setup a match with Rhodes in the quarterfinals. Garrido downed Patrick Longest of Wofford 6-2, 6-4 to advance and will face Pattern on Saturday.
Bennion turned in a 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 victory over Ryan Massinople of Furman to reach a quarterfinal matchup with No. 2 seed Thomas Panoulas of UNC Asheville. Spartan newcomer Lenhard Haupt also posted a victory in his opening match, downing Parks Schoen of Wofford 3-6, 7-6, 6-1. Haupt is slated to face Crocker in the quarterfinals of the black draw.
Competition begins on day two Saturday morning at 9 a.m.
