
Simonetti, Garrido Capture Titles at Upstate Fall Classic

Spartanburg, S.C. – Ramon Simonetti and Ignacio Garrido each won individual titles in their respective brackets to lead Upstate on the final day of the USC Upstate Fall Classic from the USC Upstate Tennis Complex.
Simonetti, playing as the No. 2 seed in the black draw, began his quest to the title with 6-0, 6-2 victory over Galen Arney of Furman in the quarterfinals on Saturday. Simonetti went on to defeat Alex Croker of UNC Asheville 7-6, 6-2 later in the day in the semifinals before knocking off Danny Bruce 6-3, 7-6 Sunday in the finals.
Garrido stormed through the green draw by winning four matches in three days, beginning with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Patrick Longest on Friday. The Oaxaca, Mexico, native went on to down Henry Pattern of UNC Asheville 6-2, 6-4 in the quarterfinals and teammate Matt Bennion 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the semifinals.
The finals pitted Garrido against teammate Felix Ewers, who reached the match by winning three straight matches of his own, including a 7-6, 6-0 upset of top-seeded Stefan Rhodes of Furman in the quarterfinals. Garrido was awarded the individual title after Ewers withdrew trailing 5-2.
The Spartans continue their fall schedule Sept. 26-27 when Upstate heads to Davidson, N.C., to take part in the Davidson Invitational.
