
Paksanont, Chanthaphaeng Lead Upstate on First Day of Terrier Intercollegiate

Spartanburg, S.C. – Pan Paksanont and Anna Chanthaphaeng turned in the lowest scores of the day to lead the USC Upstate women's golf team during the first round of the Terrier Intercollegiate on Monday afternoon from the par 72, 6012-yard Country Club of Spartanburg.
The freshmen are within two strokes of each other on the leaderboard as Paksanont carded a 77 and Chanthaphaeng a 79 to sit tied for 21st and 28th places, respectively. Paksanont is currently within two strokes of the top-10 and had a solid day both on the par 3's and par 4's. The Nonthaburi, Thailand native is tied for fourth in par 3 scoring at even-par and tied for eighth in par 4 scoring. Chanthaphaeng, a native of nearby Boiling Springs, is tied for eighth among the tournament field with 12 pars.
"Today is disappointing but there is a place to go tomorrow with a good round," said head coach Todd Lawton. "We have done it several times this fall and individual effort is what we need…one shot at a time."
Upstate also counted scores on Monday of 82 from Sidney Dermody, 84 from Payton Culler and 89 from Caroline Heustess. Dermody is tied for 41st place and Culler, who posted two birdies in her round, ended the day tied for 51st. Heustess rounded out the standings in 61st position.
The Spartans also had three players appearing as individuals with Allea Hawkins leading the way. The senior carded a first round 81 and is tied for 36th place. Allie Gennaula comes in tied for 41st at 82 while Marley DeFreitas, playing in her first collegiate tournament, sits in a tie for 51st place with a score of 84. DeFreitas finished the day 1-over on par 3 scoring after compiling a 3.25 stroke average.
For the first time this season, Upstate had all eight players on their roster competing in the same tournament. The team concluded first round action in eighth place after shooting a 322, and is seven strokes back of sixth place Gardner-Webb and Presbyterian College.
Western Carolina leads the Terrier Intercollegiate after day one by four strokes over Georgia Southern with a 296. On the individual leaderboard, Natalia Villavicencio of Western Carolina fired a 2-under 70 and holds a two-stroke lead over Georgia Southern's Iben Hvass.
The final round of the Terrier Intercollegiate will tee off Tuesday morning at 10 a.m.
