
Ewers Leads Upstate at USTA/ITA Carolina Regional

Cary, N.C. – USC Upstate junior Felix Ewers advanced to the semifinals of the consolation draw to lead the Spartan men's tennis team at the USTA/ITA Carolina Regional hosted by Duke at the Cary Tennis Park.
Despite falling in his main draw match to North Carolina's Anu Kodali, Ewers charged through to the consolation semifinals after winning three straight matches. Ewers opened play in the consolation draw by defeating Gabriel Hocevar of UNC Wilmington in straight sets 6-2, 6-2. Ewers then defeated N.C. State's Chris Mikrovas, also in straight sets, by a score of 6-2, 6-3. After a comeback win against Gabriel Dias of Winthrop 6-7(4), 6-2, 6-0, Ewers advanced to the semifinal round with another three-set triumph over South Carolina's Andrew Schafer 6-4, 2-6, 7-6(7).
The semifinal and final round matches of the consolation draw were not played.
Lenhard Haupt and Ankush Arora both earned victories in singles play as Haupt competed in the main draw and Arora the consolation bracket. Haupt won his first match of the tournament with a 6-3, 7-5 victory against Will Bissett of East Carolina before falling to North Carolina's Ronnie Schneider in the second round 6-1, 6-2. Arora captured a first round win in the consolation draw over Duke's Jason Lapidus in straight sets 6-4, 6-0.
In doubles play, Upstate picked one victory courtesy of Ewers and Haupt in the consolation draw. The duo defeated Mikrovas and Sean Burnette of N.C. State in three sets 7-6(5), 5-7, 1-0(10).
The Spartans close out their fall schedule Nov. 4-6 at the UNCW Invitational in Wilmington, N.C.
