
Upstate Posts Six Wins at Jeff Frank Davidson Invite

Davidson, N.C. – The USC Upstate men's tennis team played in its third fall tournament of the season last weekend at the Jeff Frank Davidson Invite and turned in another successful performance by posting six victories during the three-day tournament held at the Davidson Tennis Courts.
Overall, the Spartans logged six victories combined in both doubles and singles competition. Upstate competed in three doubles matches on Friday, two singles contests on Saturday, and one each on Sunday.
The Jeff Frank Davidson Invite was a points system, with points being determined based on position. The No. 1 singles position was worth 16 points and going two points down at each position to No. 8, which was worth two points. The top doubles spot was worth eight points, then going down to No. 4, which was worth two.
The Spartans opened play on Friday by going 2-1 with wins over Davidson and UNC Asheville. Upstate fell in its first doubles match of the day to Queens but responded with an 18-2 win over host Davidson. The Spartans followed with a 10-8 triumph against UNC Asheville.
In the victory over Davidson, Upstate received wins from Ankush Arora and Francisco Neto in the No. 1 match, Ignacio Garrido and Fernando Bernardes at No. 2 doubles, and Felix Ewers and Lenhard Haupt in the No. 3 contest. Garrido and Bernardes (No. 2), and Ewers and Haupt (No. 3) picked up doubles wins versus UNC Asheville.
The Spartans went unbeaten in singles action on Saturday following a 50-16 win against UNC Asheville and a 58-12 triumph over Gardner-Webb. Upstate won five matches versus UNC Asheville from Garrido, Bernardes, Haupt, Neto and Tomas Venere. A total of six matches were won by the Spartans against Gardner-Webb from Ewers, Arora, Garrido, Neto, Haupt and Venere.
Upstate closed out tournament play on Sunday with a 10-8 doubles win over Gardner-Webb before defeating Campbell in singles play 50-20. The Spartans were victorious in their No. 2 (Haupt, Ewers) and No. 3 (Bernardes, Neto) doubles contests against Gardner-Webb. In its final singles match of the weekend, Upstate won five matchups from Ewers, Arora, Haupt, Neto and Venere during the win over Campbell.
The Spartans are back in action Oct. 14-17 at the ITA Regional in Raleigh, N.C.
