
Upstate Continues Road Trip Tuesday at Charlotte

Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate men's basketball team remains on the road Tuesday evening as the Spartans travel to Charlotte, N.C. for a 7 p.m. contest against the Charlotte 49ers inside Halton Arena.
Upstate (2-2) is aiming for its second straight victory after beginning a seven-game road trip last Saturday with a 79-77 win at Charleston Southern. Mike Cunningham led four Spartans in double-figures with a game-high 21 points, while Deion Holmes had 17, Ramel Thompkins 12 and Philip Whittington 10. Whittington also recorded his first double-double of the season after grabbing 10 rebounds and set a new career-high with four blocks. Thompkins tied his career-high of four made 3-pointers in the contest.
Upstate finished the game shooting 45.0% (27-of-60) overall including a 44.0% (11-for-25) mark behind the 3-point line.
Holmes is averaging a team-high 16.0 points per game this season and is one of two players scoring in double-digits along with Cunningham (15.3). Michael Buchanan contributes a team-best 7.8 rebounds per contest and Josh Cuthbertson is tied for first in the ASUN in assists per game at 5.0.
Charlotte enters the midweek matchup with a 3-0 record following victories over Newberry, Elon and East Carolina. The 49ers currently have five players averaging in double-figures led by Jon Davis with 24.7 points per game. Anthony Vanhook also leads Charlotte with 8.0 rebounds and 6.0 assists per contest. The 49ers are under the direction of second-year head coach, and former NBA veteran, Mark Price.
The Spartans are facing Charlotte for the second time in program history with the 49ers holding a 1-0 lead in the all-time series. The teams last met on Dec. 21, 2013 in Charlotte where the 49ers recorded an 81-76 victory. In that game, Buchanan finished with 11 points and four rebounds on 5-of-8 shooting in 14 minutes of playing time.
