Spartanburg, S.C. – After spending the last seven games on the road, the USC Upstate men's basketball team returns to the Hodge Center on Saturday afternoon for a 2 p.m. non-conference game against the UVa.-Wise Cavaliers.
Upstate (5-5) wrapped up a season-long seven-game road trip last weekend by going 2-1 at the Holy City Hoops Classic hosted by The Citadel. The Spartans earned wins over Campbell and Colgate, while falling to The Citadel. Upstate had five players average in double-figures during the three-day tournament led by Michael Buchanan who posted a double-double of 18.7 points and 12.0 rebounds per game. Joining Buchanan in double-figures were Deion Holmes (15.0), Mike Cunningham (12.3), Malik Moore (12.0) and Josh Cuthbertson (10.7).
Buchanan currently leads four Spartans in scoring this season with 15.1 points per game while adding a team-leading 10.2 rebounds per contest. Along with Buchanan, Cunningham contributes 13.9 points per game, Holmes 13.2 and Ramel Thompkins 10.3. Cuthbertson dishes out a team-high 4.2 assists per game, and Philip Whittington is tied for first in the ASUN with 15 total blocks.
UVa.-Wise (2-7) is coming off an 86-63 win at home on Thursday over Berea College and will be playing its second game in Spartanburg this week. The Cavaliers fell 116-56 at Wofford on Tuesday. UVa.-Wise has three players averaging over 10.0 points per game this season led by Taiwo Badmus at 21.9, followed by Dimitri Sousa at 18.6 and Michal Seals at 12.8. The Cavaliers are under the direction of fourth-year head coach Blake Mellinger.
Upstate and UVa.-Wise are meeting for the first time in program history.
