Estero, Fla. – Sidney Dermody turned in a season-low round of 77 on Friday and currently sits in a tie for 20th place to lead the USC Upstate women's golf team after the first round of the Eagle Invitational from Stoneybrook Country Club.
Dermody's 77 (+5) bested her previous low round of 78 compiled during the first round of the F&M Bank APSU Intercollegiate on Oct. 12, 2015. The round is also the third-lowest recorded by a Spartan this season behind the 74 posted by Allea Hawkins and 75 from Payton Culler both at the Jacksonville Classic. Her effort helped Upstate to a first round 329 on Friday for a 14th place showing.
Culler is three strokes behind Dermody as she is tied for 50th position with an 8-over 80. Hawkins and Allie Gennaula are tied for 77th place as the duo each carded a round of 86 on Friday. Malika Allie rounds out the individual standings for the Spartans in a tie for 80th following her round of 87.
Mercer leads the Eagle Invitational by one stroke over Toledo with a first round 301. A total of five strokes separate Mercer from fifth place Elon. Arkansas State's Aracelly Jimenez and Payton Schanen of Mercer share the individual lead with 2-under scores of 70.
Round two of the Eagle Invitational will tee off at 8 a.m. Saturday morning.
