
Upstate Opens A-Sun Play Saturday with Home Match against North Florida

Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate men's tennis team begins the A-Sun portion of its schedule Saturday afternoon as the Spartans welcome the North Florida Ospreys to the USC Upstate Tennis Complex for a 2 p.m. match.
Upstate (3-9, 0-0) concluded a six-match road trip on Thursday with a 6-1 loss on the road at Tennessee Tech. Ignacio Garrido picked up a win in singles play as the sophomore defeated Jorge Alfonzo in straight sets 6-4, 6-4. In doubles play, Garrido and Lenhard Haupt were leading their number two match over Eduardo Mena and Marcos Bernardes 6-5 when the match was halted after Tennessee Tech captured the doubles point.
Jamie Yates leads the Spartans this season with a 7-3 singles mark, including dual matches, and has won three matches each at the three and four positions. Upstate has two doubles combinations that have posted three wins each this year beginning with Garrido and Lenhard Haupt who are 3-2 playing at number two. The number one doubles pairing of Ankusha Arora and Ramon Simonetti are 3-3 overall.
North Florida (3-8, 0-0) has recorded wins over #75 UNC Wilmington, #47 Cornell and #74 South Alabama. Six of the Ospreys eight losses this season have come against nationally-ranked opponents. Yannick Zuern leads North Florida in singles action this season with 13 total wins. In doubles play, Lasse Muscheites and Zach Goldberg hold an 8-5 mark.
The Spartans and Ospreys are meeting for the 21st time in program history Saturday with UNF holding a 16-4 lead in the all-time series. North Florida defeated Upstate 4-3 last season in Jacksonville.
The Spartans step out of conference play Saturday, Mar. 19 when they travel to Asheville, N.C. to face UNC Asheville at 1 p.m.
