
Upstate Battles NJIT Saturday Morning in Regular Season Finale

Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate men's tennis team hits the road for its final regular season match Saturday morning as it takes on the NJIT Highlanders for the first time in program history at 10 a.m. from the Naimoli Family Athletic and Recreational Facility.
Upstate (7-12, 3-2) closed out its home regular season schedule on April 10 with a 5-2 conference victory over Kennesaw State. The Spartans won two doubles matches over the Owls to capture the doubles point. After the Owls won at number two doubles, Upstate responded by taking the next two beginning at number two when Ignacio Garrido and Matt Bennion won 6-4. Ramon Simonetti and Ankush Arora picked up a 7-5 triumph at number one to give Upstate the doubles point.
Simonetti, Garrido, Jamie Yates and Lenhard Haupt all won their singles matches to give the Spartans the 5-2 victory.
Yates leads Upstate this season with an 11-5 singles mark and is 7-4 when playing at the number three position. He is also 4-1 in conference play. Simonetti and Arora currently sit at 5-3 in doubles play after playing all eight of their matches at number one.
NJIT (9-8, 0-5) has dropped six of its last seven matches, including five in conference play, before defeating Sacred Heart 6-1 on April 14. The Highlanders are under the direction of third-year head coach Ira Miller. Markus Schultz leads NJIT in singles play this season as he is 10-5 playing at the number one position. In doubles action, Schultz and Arnaud Holl are 8-6 at the number one spot.
The Spartans will host the 2016 A-Sun Tennis Championships April 22-24 at the USC Upstate Tennis Complex.
